You might not give your pet’s teeth a lot of thought, but having healthy teeth and gums is an important part of your cat’s or dog’s overall well-being. Broken or decayed teeth can cause pain, and neglected gums can cause an infection that can spread to other parts of your pet’s body. It’s estimated that… Read More
Pet Insurance & Safety
Pets can become sick or injured just like their humans do, and a trip to the vet can get costly very quickly, especially when the doctor isn’t quite sure what’s wrong with your animal friend. Pet insurance helps to ease some of the financial strain that comes along with unexpected accidents or illness, and will also sometimes cover routine preventative care.
There are many things that pet owners can do in order to ensure their pet’s safety. Whether in the home or out and about, safety should always be top of mind for pet owners.
What is pet insurance?
Pet insurance is a type of insurance that covers your pet in four major areas, including in case of an accident or illness, as well as dental and preventative care. Coverage is provided via payments of monthly premiums, with the insurance provider paying out for services once you or your vet submits receipts. In certain cases, you may have to get pre-approval for a service or procedure before your pet receives care.
Pet insurance is important because an unexpected emergency can easily cost pet parents thousands of dollars, forcing many people to have to make the choice between their love for their pet and paying the bills. Sometimes, pet parents might have to surrender their beloved companion because they simply cannot afford veterinary care.
Does pet insurance cover regular vet visits?
Some pet insurance policies may help cover the costs of routine veterinary visits. Be sure to read the fine print to determine if a plan covers routine or preventive care. If not, it might be available at an additional fee.
Who needs pet insurance?
Most people who own a pet should consider pet insurance, especially if your pet is a breed that is prone to costly health conditions. While you might not necessarily want insurance for your hamster or goldfish, it’s worth considering for a purebred exotic cat or dogs such as German shepherds (hip dysplasia) or Dachshunds (back problems).
Safety in the home
First, check your pet’s collar regularly to ensure that it still fits them properly, and isn’t damaged. Make sure any vaccination or identification tags are secure and up to date. Cats should be kept indoors in order to help them live a long and happy life.
Toys are a lot of fun for pets, but be sure to check them regularly for loose parts, strings, and other potentially harmful issues. Replace broken or worn out toys promptly. Do not let your cat play with string, as it poses a very serious problem if swallowed.
Safety in the car
Many animals enjoy car rides just like their humans, but the car can be a dangerous place for a pet if you aren’t prepared. It should go without saying to never let your pet ride in an open truck bed, which provides no protection from the elements.
First, during extremely cold and hot days, do not leave your pet in the car. Pets can easily suffer frostbite or heat stroke, resulting in injury and death in a very short period of time.
Second, ensure your pet is safely secured while riding in the car. There are harnesses and seat belt type products that can help to secure your pet, but placing them in a carrier on the floor is also good for keeping them safe. Do not let your pet ride in your lap while you are driving, as this could easily cause an accident.
While it might seem fun to let your dog enjoy the passing smells by sticking their nose out the window, the practice can actually be harmful. If their paws or head are hanging out, they could be hit by passing vehicles, persons, or sticks. Because a vehicle is often moving at high speeds, even small insects can cause serious injury if they blow into your pet’s eye.
Pets and poisons
Pets are curious and will sniff and eat anything they can get their paws on. Products that are toxic to humans — such as cleaning supplies — are also harmful for pets. Ensure cleaning supplies, pest control products, and other poisons are kept securely out of reach of your pet.
Don’t forget to take your pet to the vet regularly for checkups and routine wellness care. This is one of the most important things pet parents can do for their pet’s safety and wellbeing over the long term.
