Pet Food & Treats
Whether your pet’s a tiny Guinea pig or a 100-pound large breed dog, you want them to have the best food to keep them healthy and satisfied, but with so many options available, choosing the right pet food can seem baffling.
We’ve answered some frequently asked questions about pet food and treats below to help give you the lowdown. The more you know, the easier it will be to find the right food for your furry, feathered, or scaly friend.
What are Pet Food and Treats Made of?
This varies depending on type of pet food since it must be species appropriate. Dog and cat food, for instance, is primarily made from meat and grains or other starches. Whereas hamster food or Guinea pig food is made from a range of plant-based ingredients, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts.
Treats can also vary and can either be solely meat-based (which is thhe case for most treats), or it can be a mixture of other common combos, such as peanut butter and jelly.
What’s the Best Dog Food?
Life would be much easier for dog parents if we could tell you there was a single best dog food that was right for all dogs, but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. Of course, there are some dog foods that are of better quality than others – that use top-end ingredients, avoid fillers, and don’t use artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives – but you need to take your dogs individual needs into account. For example, a dog with allergies or a dog that needs to lose weight will have different nutritional requirements to an active, healthy dog. There are also puppy foods for puppies, diets designed for senior dogs, and small breed dog foods.
What’s the Best Cat Food?
Like with dogs, there’s not necessarily a single best cat food. With cats you generally need to consider their personal preferences, since they’re known to be picky eaters. Some cats that will only accept wet food or won’t touch particular flavors. Again, you must consider the individual needs of your cat – you might choose a diet cat food for an overweight cat or an indoor cat formula if you have a house cat. Whatever the needs of your cat, you should be able to find an appropriate cat food.
Is Pet Food Safe?
You might have heard tales of subpar meat and other nasty ingredients making their way into pet food, but for the most part pet food is safe. If you choose a quality pet food from a well-known brand, 99.99% of the time it will be safe for your pet to eat. Of course, mistakes can happen and sometimes something can end up in the food chain that wasn’t meant to be in there. As such, we’d recommend keeping an eye on pet food recalls in case a problem arises.
What Do Small Pets Eat?
Most small pets that people keep at home – such as rabbits, hamsters, and Guinea pigs – are herbivores and eat plant-based food. You can buy commercial formulas, but you might also top this up with fresh fruits and vegetables. Other small pets are omnivores, like rats, so their commercial foods will contain a mixture of meat and plant ingredients.
