The Best Sifting Litter Boxes

Cats can bring a huge amount of joy into your life, but what’s never joyful is cleaning out the litter box. Sifting litter boxes have integrated sifters, allowing the clean litter to pass through but retaining the poops and clumps to be disposed of. This is a much quicker and easier method than scooping each poop and urine-soaked clump individually, and makes cleaning out the litter box a far less messy task.

We reviewed dozens of sifting litter boxes to identify the best of the best. To compare these litter boxes, we considered a range of factors, such as the style of litter box, ease of use, size, and average customer reviews.

Our Top Pick: Van Ness Sifting Enclosed Cat Litter Pan

If your cat enjoys the privacy of a covered litter box, consider the Van Ness Sifting Enclosed Cat Litter Pan. The large size measures 19.5 x 15.2 x 17.5 inches, which is big enough for the vast majority of cats. The top portion is easy to put on and remove, with a simple snap closure. In the lid, you’ll find a zeolite air filter to help reduce the odors that come from the litter tray.

The bottom part is much like other sifting litter tray, with a three part design; a top solid tray to collect hold the litter, one sifter that you tip the contents of the main tray into when you want to clean it, and a second solid tray to collect the clean litter in after sifting. The $18 price tag is extremely reasonable for a covered model.

Van Ness Sifting Enclosed Cat Litter Pan Key Features:

  • Odor- and strain-resistant finish
  • Carry handle lets you easily move it to a better spot for cleaning
  • Replaceable filter to remove odors

Omega Paw Roll n Clean Litter Box

Cleaning out your cat’s litter box has never been easier thanks to the “roll ‘n clean” design.

buy now
$35.42 USD

Not only is the Omega Paw Roll ‘n Clean Litter Box a sturdy, well-sized covered litter box, the unorthodox sifting design makes litter box cleaning even simpler. Rather that needing to sift manually, as with the majority of sifting litter boxes, you simply roll the whole litter box upside down, then roll it back upright again. By doing this, the contents of the litter tray passes through the sifter and traps the waste in a pull-out container. Then all you need to do it empty the container and your cleaning task is done.

Made from durable plastic with reinforced clips, this is a covered litter box meant to last. The large size is big enough for multi-cat households. At $50, it’s the most expensive option in our top five, but we definitely think it’s worth the money.

  • Super simple to use
  • Offers privacy for your cats
  • Strong and durable design

Who Should Buy a Sifting Litter Box

Anyone looking for an easier way to clean out their cat’s litter tray should consider buying a sifting litter box. A sifting litter box negates the need for litter scoops and makes the whole cleaning process quicker and simpler than with standard litter boxes.

Unlike automatic litter boxes, there’s no electricity involved, which makes sifting litter boxes more versatile and less expensive.

Important Features to Consider

A sifting litter box should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting a sifting litter box for your cat:

  • Open vs. enclosed. Do you want a sifting litter tray that’s completely open or an enclosed model with a hood or cover? You might already know whether your cat has a preference for one style or the other. If not, bear in mind that open models are cheaper but enclosed models do a better job of containing smells inside the litter box.
  • Litter box size. Check the dimensions of your chosen sifting litter box and make sure it’s of an appropriate size for your cat. If your feline friend is especially large or you have more than one cat at home, you may need to buy an extra-large litter tray.
  • Ease of cleaning. Some sifting litter boxes are made from highly polished materials that are easy to wipe clean and resist staining. Also consider that any litter boxes with recessed areas or awkward-to-reach nooks and crannies will be harder to keep clean.
  • Rim height. You can find open sifting litter boxes with extra tall rims to help contain the litter. This is a great feature if your cat is prone to kicking it all over the place but doesn’t like enclosed litter boxes.
  • Color. Although it’s not the most important of all features, you might want to choose a sifting litter box in a color that won’t look out of place with your home decor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sifting litter box and how does it work?

A sifting litter box is a cat litter container with a sifting tray to separate the solid waste and clumps from the clean litter. Although there are some exceptions, most sifting litter boxes have a three tray design. The top and bottom trays are solid while the middle tray has a sifter built in. You fill the top tray with cat litter for your cat to use as normal. Once it’s time to clean out your cat’s litter box, you tip the contents of the top tray into the middle tray (which is still sitting in the bottom tray). Then you lift the middle sifter tray and shake it slightly so the clean litter falls through the gaps into the bottom tray and the waste stays in the sifter. Finally, you discard the waste, tip the clean litter back into the top tray (and top it up, if necessary), and stack the three parts back together.

Do sifting litter boxes work?

Some sifting litter boxes work better than others but if you choose a high-quality model (such as one of our top five), it will work as it should do.

How often do you change a sifting litter box?

Ideally, you should sift out the feces and urine clumps from your cat’s litter box daily. However, if your cat is allowed to roam outside and only uses his litter box infrequently, you can do this less often. As long as you keep up with regularly removing waste, you only need to completely empty, bleach, and refill your cat’s litter tray every couple of months.

Do you need special cat litter for a sifting litter box?

There are many kinds of cat litter out there, but the good news is that you can use most varieties with a sifting litter box. Depending on the size of the holes in the sifter, some don’t cope well with litter pellets or paper litter, but other kinds are generally fine.
