Questions to Ask Your Memphis Dog Day Care Provider

Before you drop off your dog to a day care provider, you will want to talk to the one you are considering, either in person or on the telephone. Here are some questions you should consider asking so you know that the person you choose will be able to meet your dog’s needs.

  • How often will you be home? Most dog day care providers are home most of the time. Some work or attend school part-time outside the home, and a few work full-time outside of the home. Be sure that you know how much time your dog will spend alone.
  • How often will my dog be able to go out? If your dog is used to spending hours at home without a potty break, it might not be an issue, but if you have a puppy, an older dog, or simply a dog who is used to being able to go out frequently, make sure that your dog sitter will be able to accommodate their needs.
  • Have you cared for dogs with the same needs as my dog? If your dog has separation anxiety, is afraid of thunderstorms, is still potty-training, is aggressive toward other dogs or cats, or has various other personality quirks, make sure that your day care provider can handle it. Also, if your dog is on any type of medication that will need to be given while you are gone, make sure they can administer the pills or injection.
  • How many other dogs will you be caring for? You will want to be sure that your dog sitter won’t have more dogs than they can care for safely. It’s also important that your dog is the only one in the home (or can be separated safely from any other dogs present) if he tends to be aggressive toward other dogs.
  • Are there cats or children in the home? If your dog is not good with cats and/or children, be sure that there are none in the home. If you aren’t sure because your pup has never been exposed to cats or kids, it’s safest to assume your dog isn’t cat- or child-friendly.
  • What is your drop-off and pick-up policy? Ensure that you will be able to make it to work and to the dog day care on time to avoid incurring fees (or an irate boss).
  • What should I bring for my dog? Ask the sitter if you should bring your dog’s bed, a crate, and his food bowl. You can send along a stuffed animal or one of your t-shirts if you think it will make your dog feel more secure, but be aware that your dog might become possessive of it if there are other dogs in the home.
  • What will my dog’s day look like? Ideally, your dog’s day at the dog day care will look similar to his day at home, with some extra interaction thrown in to keep him from getting bored and lonely. If you are usually on the go with him, then he might become nervous or bored if the dog sitter does not take him out and about. On the other hand, if your dog is not used to going to dog parks or on long walks, this could be stressful if he’s expected to do so while at day care. Look for someone whose routine is close to your own, if possible.

Don’t get stressed out about finding a good dog day care! You can use Rover.com to look up the sitters mentioned as well as many others. We hope you find the perfect day care provider for your fur baby!
