Important Considerations to Keep in Mind

Before you leave your pet at a dog day care, you should call and interview the provider. In some cases, they might request or require a meet-and-greet, particularly if they have other dogs in the home already. Here are some of the things you will want to talk about during your interview or meeting.

  • Your work schedule. Make sure that your provider is available early enough for you to make it to work on time and late enough to avoid incurring extra fees if you run into some traffic on the way home.
  • Your dog’s particular quirks and needs. Most dogs have some behaviors that other people might find amusing, puzzling, or even alarming. For example, if your dog barks at children on bicycles or if he is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, this is something to mention to the dog sitter. You can also let them know if your dog tends to explore garbage cans or if he loves to tear up couch pillows.
  • Whether your dog gets along well with others. If your dog is afraid of or aggressive with other dogs or thinks cats would make a good snack, it is important to let your care provider know.
  • Your dog’s potty-training status. Any dog could have an accident in a strange environment; this is particularly true if your provider has a different type of flooring than you have in your home. A one-off potty accident is not likely to be cause for concern, but it is important to let the day care provider know if your dog tends to wet when nervous or has a habit of pottying indoors.
  • Your preferences as far as exercise goes. The summers in Scottsdale are hot, and if you are uncomfortable with your dog being outside when it’s a certain temperature point, be sure to speak up. This could be a matter of health, particularly for short-snouted dogs. Also, let your sitter know if your dog is more of a couch potato or more of a live wire in terms of how much energy he has to expend.
  • Any allergies, aversions, or ingredients that you don’t want your dog to have. You should send food and treats with your pup, but some day care providers will also have their own treats on hand. If you don’t want your dog offered anything other than what you pack, please say so.

Finally, pay attention to your gut instinct and how your dog acts. Most dog day care providers know how to appeal even to shy or timid dogs, so expect your dog to warm up to the sitter relatively quickly. If yours doesn’t, there might be something in the home that is making them feel stressed. You might try some CBD treats or packing your dog’s favorite soft toy, but if he still doesn’t seem comfortable, don’t feel bad about trying a different day care provider. Your dog sitter wants your pup to be comfortable, so there will be no hard feelings, and, best of all, you and your dog will both be able to relax and enjoy the daily experience.
