The Best Dog Day Care in Santa Monica, CA

Whether our pups like it or not, many of us need to work outside the home. For a dog, spending eight or nine hours alone in the house without any potty breaks and interaction might be too hard, and some dogs will develop separation anxiety or start chewing up the sofa out of boredom. Even if you don’t work outside the home, you might occasionally have a situation where you need to be gone for the day and you don’t want your best furry friend to be alone for hours on end. One potential solution is to find a Santa Monica dog day care provider. You’d drop off your pooch for the day, and he’d have a blast playing, napping, and going for walks until you get home that evening.

We know how hard it is to find someone that you trust to watch your furbaby, so we’ve combed through the various service providers on Rover.com to find the best dog day care providers in Santa Monica, California. These are individuals who open up their homes to a limited number of dogs, so you won’t be leaving your dog at a kennel. Instead, you can form a relationship with one care provider and, in some cases, their family, and know that your dog is safe and loved while you’re away.

Judson was responsive and reassuring whenever I had questions. He provided regular updates and photos during Kona’s stay. He has other dogs while he was watching Kona which made it a fun play date for her. I plan to use Judson’s services again and I’d recommend him for people considering using his services. -Christina C.

Judson does a phenomenal job! He’s great with the dogs. And his space is so welcoming and inviting for the dogs. Nice size yard. My standard poodle is very sensitive and trembles when we go to a regular daycare. My guy wags his tail in excitement when we arrive at Judson’s in-home daycare! -Jackie O.

What to Ask Your Dog Day Care Provider

Before dropping off your dog with a new person, you will, of course, want to interview them and even meet them, if possible. Read through this list of questions you should consider when signing up for dog day care, and ask the ones that apply to your dog.

  • What time is drop-off and pick-up? Of course, you are going to want to find a provider who offers services during the time you’re at work and commuting. It’s not worth being stressed out every day if you know that with traffic, you’ll barely make it on time. Look for someone with flexibility or who is available at least an hour after you think you’ll probably make it on most days.
  • What other dogs will be there? You need to make sure that your dog will get along with the resident dogs, if there are any, as well as any other dogs that are there regularly. If your dog is not happy to socialize with other dogs, find a day care provider who won’t have other dogs in the home.
  • Do you have experience with my dog’s special needs? Never leave a dog with someone who does not know about or feel equipped to handle his needs. If your dog requires medication, make sure the sitter can administer it. If he is food-aggressive or not fully potty trained, be sure to talk about it with your provider.
  • How will you keep my dog secure? Many dog day care providers live in apartments or otherwise do not have a fenced-in yard. Be sure that they have a plan for keeping your dog safe when outside and for preventing your dog from running out the door. Remember that in the beginning, the area will be unfamiliar for your dog, so even if he normally can be trusted off-leash in your neighborhood, that does not mean he will be safe off-leash in someone else’s.
  • How often will my dog be crated? Unless your dog is already used to spending a lot of time in a crate, look for someone who will minimize crate time. During crate time, consider sending a couple of toys that your dog can chew on or snuggle. Here’s a list of toys that will stand up to chew sessions, and here’s one of some soft loveys that your dog can carry around and sleep with.
  • How often will you be away from home? Someone who works from home or who does not work at all will likely be home most of the time to attend to potty needs and to give your dog plenty of attention. It’s still wise to ask, however. You know what you’re comfortable with as far as how long your dog will be happy being left without human interaction.
  • What will my dog’s day look like? If your dog’s main goal in life is to hold down the couch and eat cookies, you might not want a sitter who will be taking him on a five-mile run each day. On the other hand, if you have a very energetic dog, he won’t be happy if he’s limited to a few potty breaks in a small yard. Look for a day care provider who will meet your dog’s needs for activity and interaction.

Finding a dog day care provider who will love your pooch as much as you do can be hard, but we hope that one of the ten Santa Monica doggy day care providers listed above will help you with your search.
